Life in the Collections Department at CWB National Leasing

You may think the role of collector is tracking down people who haven’t paid their bills and getting them to pay, but it’s so much more than that!

Employees who work in CWB National Leasing’s Collections department need to be analytical and compassionate; they’re detectives and relationship-builders at the same time.

I sat down with Rose Mandaliti, Manager, Contract Administration at CWB National Leasing, and asked her a few questions about what it’s like to work in the company’s Collections department.

What’s your main objective working in Collections?

We work to mitigate loss by supporting customers who are having trouble making their payments. Our goal is to help them fulfill their end of the deal using creative solutions, while still maintaining positive relationships.

What’s your favourite thing about working in the Collections department?

I can’t pick one, so here’s three:

1. The variety. A lot of what we do involves problem-solving and working with a number of different people, internal and external, which keeps things interesting.
2. Being able to help customers through difficult situations.
3. The comradery – we have a really great team. They’re always willing to help out when co-workers are in a bind, and we also have a lot of fun together.

What does it take to be a great candidate for the Collections department?

Hmm… I would say someone who’s a great communicator, a problem-solver, and very analytical – someone who’s willing to take initiative and come up with creative solutions to achieve the best possible outcomes for our customers and for CWB National Leasing. And of course, someone who has a good sense of humour would likely fit in with our crew!

Do you have a favourite customer memory?

Yes. A couple years ago, I was working to secure leased equipment from a lessee who passed away. I contacted the lessee’s business, which led me to his spouse. We got the equipment back and worked through the shortfall. At the end of it all, the lessee’s spouse gave me a big hug and told me I was the best creditor she had dealt with since her spouse passed. The ability to help someone who’s going through a hard time is a wonderful feeling.
